LIDIA AND GUSTAW

Author of “A WORLD APART” a best-seller book published in 1952 describing his life in the soviet gulags, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński wasn’t always a prominent Polish literature figure. When this soldier from the Polish Army fell in love with Lidia Croce in 1944, a high society woman, an incredible story unfolds. Synopsis: Lidia Croce, daughter of the philosopher Benedetto Croce, a famous Italian figure, falls in love in 1944 with a Polish soldier, on his way to the Montecassino front, Gustaw Herling Grudziński. He became later one of the most influencing Polish writers in exile of the 20th century. From the battlefield, they wrote each other passionate love letters. Near the end of the war, fate separated them, to bring them back together many years later. Today, some other writers  and friends and the daughter of the writer,  Marta, tell their story: the Soviet gulags, the Second World War, Italy and Europe reconstruction, the Cold War. But also, the attempts  from the children to get into the “world apart” of their father, hoping to gain his  affection
